Beaches: Which Actually Wins?
Andaman's Radhanagar Beach (Havelock) consistently ranks among Asia's top 10 beaches — white sand, clear turquoise water, and a backdrop of tropical forest. Genuinely world-class. Maldives beaches are on a different level entirely — 360-degree white sand surrounded by a turquoise lagoon so clear you can see the fish from your villa. If beaches are your sole criterion, Maldives wins narrowly. But Andaman's variety (beaches, forests, mangroves, history) makes it a richer overall destination.
Marine Life: Maldives Wins Decisively
Andaman has excellent snorkelling and diving with vibrant coral gardens, sea turtles, and diverse reef fish. The Maldives takes it to another level: manta rays, whale sharks (Ari Atoll), hammerhead sharks (Fuvahmulah), and some of the clearest water on earth. For serious divers, the Maldives is in a different league.
Value for Money
Andaman is dramatically better value. A couple can have a luxurious 5-night Andaman trip with water sports, island-hopping, and nice accommodation for ₹70,000–1,00,000 total. The same quality experience in the Maldives (4-star resort island, comparable activities) costs ₹2,00,000–3,00,000. Maldives guesthouses (local islands) close the gap significantly — a couple can do 5 nights for ₹1,00,000–1,30,000.
Our Recommendation
First trip? Go to Andaman — better value, no passport stress, and you will love it. Honeymoon? Maldives is worth the splurge — the overwater villa sunrise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Already done Andaman? Maldives guesthouses are your next step — all the beauty at Andaman-adjacent prices.

The comparison above covers beaches and marine life. Honeymoons turn on different things — privacy, the room, the transfer, and how much of the budget the flight eats. On those:
| Andaman | Maldives | |
|---|---|---|
| Passport & visa | None needed — it is India. A real advantage if a passport or visa is not ready in time. | Passport plus free 30-day visa on arrival. |
| The room | Beachfront resorts and cottages; no true overwater villas. | The overwater villa is the reason people come. Nothing in Andaman replicates it. |
| Privacy | Shared beaches, some resort-only stretches. | One resort per island; on the better islands you may not see another couple all day. |
| Getting to the room | Flight to Port Blair, ferry to Havelock or Neil, road to resort. | Flight to Malé, then speedboat or seaplane — seaplanes only fly in daylight, which shapes your flight choice. |
| Alcohol & rules | Normal Indian rules. | Available on resort islands; not on local islands. Matters if you choose a guesthouse to save money. |
| Best months | October to May; avoid the monsoon. | November to April; May and October are the value shoulder. |
When Andaman wins
- Your budget is under about a lakh for the couple and you would rather have a good beach resort than a stretched Maldives guesthouse trip.
- Passport or visa timing is a problem.
- You want diving or snorkelling variety across several islands rather than one resort's house reef.
- You like the idea of exploring — Andaman rewards moving around; the Maldives rewards staying put.
When the Maldives wins
- The overwater villa is the point. It usually is, for a honeymoon.
- You want privacy more than activity.
- You are flying from Bangalore or Chennai — direct flights to Malé are short, and the whole trip is easier than it looks. See Maldives honeymoon from Bangalore or from Chennai.
- Budget allows a resort island, not just a local-island guesthouse. Our Maldives honeymoon guide shows the bands.
Frequently asked questions
Andaman or Maldives — which is better for a honeymoon?
The Maldives, if the budget reaches a resort island: the overwater villa and one-resort-per-island privacy are not available in Andaman. If the budget is tighter, a good Andaman beach resort is the better honeymoon than a cramped Maldives guesthouse compromise.
Do I need a passport for Andaman?
No. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are part of India, so Indian citizens travel with normal domestic ID. The Maldives requires a passport with six months validity and issues a free 30-day visa on arrival.
Is Andaman as beautiful as the Maldives?
The beaches at Radhanagar and Neil Island stand comparison with many Maldives beaches. What Andaman cannot match is the overwater villa, the private-island feel, and the clarity of the water on the best Maldives house reefs.
Which is cheaper, Andaman or Maldives?
Andaman, clearly, per our budget comparison above — a five-night couple's trip can come in at less than half of a comparable Maldives resort stay, largely because there is no international flight, no visa and no seaplane transfer.
